V. J. Keating, Native Of Here, Dies
Vincent Joseph Keating, 72, who began his newspaper career on the Cumberland Evening Times nearly 50 years ago, died yesterday in San Francisco.
Mr. Keating retired as a San Francisco Examiner copy editor two years ago. He was copy desk chief for the Los Angeles Examiner for 25 years before moving to San Francisco.
Mr. Keating started his career with the Cumberland Evening TImes and then went with the Pittsburgh Post—Gazette and Pittsburgh Sun—Telegram before moving to the West Coast.
He was one of the national founders of the Order of the Alhambra of the Knights of Columbus.
He was the son of the late Col. John Keating, a prominent banker, brewery official and real estate executive here, and the late Mrs. Sarah (Hughes) Keating.
Mr. Keating was graduated from Mt. St. Mary’s College, Emmitsburg, and also studied at the University of Virginia.
